Finding the therapist who’s right for you!
Hey everyone, Anna here!
Today, I wanted to talk about how daunting and often difficult it can be to find a therapist that feels right for you.
It’s hard enough just getting to that point where you admit to needing help, but now that you have, where to begin? Maybe you’ve been going through profiles on Psychology Today, or sifting through therapy blogs on the Internet, but how do you know which one is the right fit?
First off, I want to congratulate you for getting this far—It’s not easy for us to admit we need help, and doing so is a HUGE first step!
Second, just as dating isn’t always a piece of cake, finding that therapist who’s right for you isn’t necessarily going to be either. Opening up to someone with your deepest, darkest secrets isn’t easy; but it can transform your life for the better.
In this video, I discuss my tips for seeking out a therapist:
- It’s always helpful to come in with some idea of what you’re looking for. Maybe just some coping skills for dealing with anxiety. Or perhaps a closer look at your depression and how to overcome it. Maybe you’re dealing with traumatic memories and aren’t sure how to grapple with and move past them.
- It’s also good to know how much time and money you can commit to therapy, and what your insurance company’s policy is regarding counseling.
- But most important, and probably the trickiest, is finding that therapist who you really connect with. Most counselors offer 15-minute, free phone consultations. Take full advantage of these!!! You should be using them as often as you can to feel things out from the get-go. Make a list of several and call them in turn—it may feel like speed dating, but at least you don’t have to feel bad about “Nexting” anyone! It’s all in good professional fun. Good luck!
